California Open Kettlebell Sport Championship

Annual since 2013 · World Championship for Clubs & Individuals since 2017 · IKO-led from 2026
The California Open is one of the longest-running premier kettlebell sport competition in North America. What began in 2013 as a local event hosted by the Orange Kettlebell Club has grown into a world-renowned championship that attracts lifters from across the globe. Since 2019, it has also served as the official IKO World Championship for Clubs & Individuals, making it a cornerstone of the international kettlebell calendar.
Early Years (2013–2016)
Founded and hosted by the Orange Kettlebell Club (OKC) in California, the California Open quickly became a magnet for athletes across the U.S. and abroad. It helped establish kettlebell sport in North America by combining professional-level judging with a welcoming atmosphere for newcomers.
WAKSC Era (2017–2018)
In 2017 and 2018 the California Open partnered with the World Association of Kettlebell Sport Clubs (WAKSC) and served as the official WAKSC World Championship. This partnership elevated the event to true world-stage status, bringing record-setting performances and strong international participation.
IKO / World League Era (2019–2025)
Starting in 2019, the California Open entered a new phase through collaboration with the International Kettlebell Organization (IKO) and its Kettlebell Sport World League. From then on, the event also doubled as the IKO World Championship for Clubs & Individuals, becoming a fixture on the global competition calendar.
Even during the pandemic years, IKO innovated with hybrid formats (in-person + online submissions), ensuring athletes worldwide could still participate. Annual results confirm robust international participation across weight classes and ranks, from grassroots athletes to Master of Sport International Class (MSIC).
Transition After 2025
Following the California Open x IKO World Championship 2025, the Orange Kettlebell Club closed operations. To preserve the legacy and continuity of the event, the rights to run the California Open were formally transferred to IKO. From 2026 forward, the California Open continues under IKO’s direct leadership — ensuring the event’s place as both an elite World Championship and a community-building event of kettlebell sport in North America.
